Listen to Preaching

November 2, 2009

HeadphonesThe internet, ipods, and podcasts have made it easier than ever to access Bible centered, Christ saturated preaching from areas of the country or the world that we do not live in.  As one means of growing in Christ I would encourage you to regularly listen to Bible teaching and preaching.  Many of you may attend a weekend worship service where you are blessed to hear faithful men preach God’s Word.  Continue to do that and recognize its value.  In addition, I would recommend downloading the weekly sermons of another preacher to listen to during the week.  I often listen to preaching while working out, driving in the car, eating a meal, or engaging in the study of God’s Word.  Preaching is powerful and I believe you will only be motivated to follow Jesus more closely if you hear His message communicated at other times throughout the week besides Sunday mornings.

Before I give you a list of recommendations, let me make a small caveat.  Do not replace your attendance at a weekend worship service with podcasts. It is important for all of us to hear God’s Word preached by men who we have the opportunity to know, be accountable to, grow with, and fellowship among.  Listening to a sermon given by someone you don’t know and will probably never meet should not replace the vital experience of the local church.  The slippery slope of hearing a preacher whom God has greatly gifted as a communicator may cause you to devalue the ability, efforts, and labors of your pastor.  This is as plain as I can say it.  That is the wrong attitude and a device of the evil one used to destroy churches.  We don’t worship men, we worship God.  Pray against that and guard your heart, mind, and soul against that type of attitude.  I am extremely blessed to sit under the preaching of a gifted Bible preacher and a man who labors extensively to bring the Word to me and others each week.  If you are as fortunate, praise God for that.  If not, work to find a situation where that can happen.

I hope and pray that each of the men I list below would tell you the same thing.  Be a part of a local church, make that the focus of your faith community efforts, pray that God would feed your through the preaching of the Bible there, and use the sermons of others as AN ADDITION toward growth in Christ.

Now, here are a few suggestions.  Search for these men in the itunes store under podcasts and you will find weekly messages from them and the churches they serve.  They are in no particular order.

Matt Chandler (The Village Church, Texas)

John Piper (Desiring God Sermon Audio)

Mark Driscoll (Mars Hill Church, Seattle, WA)

Francis Chan (Cornerstone Church, Simi Valley, CA)

Josh Harris (Covenant Life Church, Gaithersburg, MD)

Tim Keller (Redeemer Presbyterian Church, NY)

*additionally The Gospel Coalition webiste has hundreds (if not thousands) of free sermons, all that will be theologically sound and trustworthy
