Bait 1: You
Jesus was the greatest missionary who ever lived. Therefore in order to realize our complete calling and full potential as missionaries to our particular mission fields, we must follow his lead. My context is downtown San Jose. In this area, like every other mission field, our evangelistic bait is of supreme importance. Whether we know it or not every time with share our faith, live on mission, tell someone about Jesus, or preach the Word we use bait. And in the world of missional bait not all “worms” are created equally.
Immediately following the baptism of Christ, Jesus followed the Spirit into the wilderness. It was here that Jesus was tempted in every way, yet without sin. This took place prior to the principal earthly ministry of Christ. What is our perfect example teaching us by way of his missionary lifestyle? Jesus is displaying the importance of the bait of personal spiritual formation.
Personal spiritual formation is often the neglected form of bait in many evangelistic efforts. The breadth of time can be spent crafting strategy, perfecting pithy intellectually bullying lines, and reveling in our own supposed righteousness. A life that is wholly devoted to Christ, pursuing humility, and daily refashioning self to that of a Christ, is one of the strongest forms of missional bait we could ever use.
Pursue Jesus. Humble yourself. Pray for your Growth. And tell people of the old, old story. You are bait.
