Advent Traditions: Carols

This is the final installment of the Advent Traditions series.  I love the church services during the Advent season because we sing many Christmas favorites as a part of our praise to God.  This year as I sang, I was reminded of the many great truths that are proclaimed in the words of these hymns.  Sure, there are lyrics that contain bad theology, but many lines are packed with Christ-exalting, God-honoring truth.  This year, as we sang something occurred to me.  During the Christmas season many people who rarely darken the door of a church attend worship services and sing these songs at the top of their lungs.  They know them, often by heart.  Think about some of the lyrics that are sung:

“Long lay the world in sin and error pining, ’till He appeared and the soul felt its worth”

“Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth”

“To save us all from Satan’s power when we had gone astray”

I praise God that many who don’t know Him still have His truth embedded in them.  For those who follow Christ, may we use the familiarity of the Christmas season to help others see truth and exalt Christ!

Adam – thanks for the series. I had the same thought on carols the other day. I was standing in line at a store where they are prohibited from saying “Merry Christmas” – while carols about the true meaning of Christmas were playing.

    Happy New Year!
